Nagios is a great back end for monitoring computer systems (and not only). It is really not a full fledged management system. But who needs those complex systems with steep learning curves when you end up using only 10% of their functionality. Well, if you need one there are many out there.

To get Nagios going there is a lot of work in setting it up, gathering the needed components and so on. But in the end you will have a unique system tailored for the job and your exact environment that you want to monitor.

I started playing around with Nagios some time in the Spring of 2005 after looking at and actually having access to those "big systems".  I needed a way to monitor a sizable number of systems and never liked the "pay dearly and mostly never use" approach of canned software. So I was led to Nagios. The results of my explorations are on this page.

After careful reconsideration I decided to start a new project, named Triton. Its objective is to assemble together all the parts and configurations required to do serious monitoring using Nagios. This is not exactly trivial if we consider the networked enterpise and its need for monitoring. On many occasions I abondoned good promising projects that were not so easy to install and configure. So Triton tries to minimize the effort and time required to install and operate a Nagios Enterprise Monitoring System.

My RPMs for Nagios. I maintain RPMs of the Nagios software necessary to install the whole system.

I formatted this from the original html document source for nagios v 2.0 and thought someone might need it. My objective was to make it more readable for the folks that like printed material on their desk. If you are like me, I like to have a printed desk reference. I intend to keep it up to date as well as reformat it. This is a large file. It will hopefully get smaller as I keep cleaning it. Get the latest version. Older versions are for historical purposes only. (I hope I am not violating any copyright here since the HTML sources have one).

Nagios notes
My notes on Nagios. As always Open Source lacks on documentation. So here I add my own contribution. Here I also put material that I believe is not found in the official manual. Mostly related on how to install Nagios through the RPM install files.

My Nagios bookmarks
Here is a list of almost every Nagios (related) site I found on the net. Will check some of these some time.

Project Triton - a Nagios monitor and messenger (in its infancy)
Aims at using OS software to create an Enterpise class monitoring system. Systems used are: Nagios, MRTG, RRDTool, Syslog.
